Symantec Bare Metal Restore on Dissimilar System – Windows

Bare metal restore is the most important feature on NetBackup software, it helps to restore the data on the computer without having previously installed software or operating system. Bare Metal restore requires the following. The following is to perform a bare metal restore on a different machine which you were replacing in the place of original backed up machine. Netbackup verify the ip address, client name and Mac address before restoring the client. It also requires reverse DNS to restore client. IP address and client name is not an issue, mac address will be an issue while restoring. Mac address has to be edited before restoring a client, it can be edited by copying the configuration file from the original backed up machine.

Follow the steps to do the Bare Metal Restoring:

1. Symantec Bare Metal Server Setup.

2.Shared Resource Tree.

3. Backup Policy.

4. Prepare to Restore

i. Same Machine.

ii. Different Machine.

4. Symantec NetBackup Boot CD.

5. Bare Metal Restore.

Make sure that backup policy has bare metal restore option checked.

 

Optional to backup all drives.

If you have both option enabled on a backup policy, backup client will be displayed on Bare Metal Restore client after a completion of Full backup. Right click on a client which is currently down and select a new client configuration.

Type a new configuration name and select copy a configuration, then click on ok.

Now right click on newly created client and then select change to edit mac address information.

Select Network Interface on the left side and then right click on mac address. Select change.

Type the mac address of new machine and then click ok.

 

Find out the old and new mac address information.

Right click on newly created client configuration ie DSR and the click on Prepare to Restore.

Scroll down and select the DSR configuration, shared resource tree and then click ok, shared resource tree must be created before restoring, that should match with architecture of a machine ie 64 bit as per below configuration.

Once its successful, it will display the pop.

Now create a Symantec Boot CD to restore the above client.
