How to Install VirtualBox on Ubuntu 22.04

VirtualBox is a widely known open-source virtualization software that lets you run multiple guest operating systems (virtual machines) on a laptop or desktop.

It supports the guest virtual machines running Windows, Linux, BSD, OS/2, Solaris, Haiku, and OSx86 operating systems.

Install VirtualBox on Ubuntu 22.04

The latest version of the VirtualBox package is available from the Ubuntu repository. So, you do not need to set up external repositories to install VirtualBox.

First, update the repository index.

sudo apt update

Then, install VirtualBox using the apt command.

sudo apt install -y virtualbox

You can start using VirtualBox after the installation is over.

NOTE: UEFI Secure Boot Enabled

On an Ubuntu system with UEFI secure boot enabled, during the VirtualBox installation, the system will ask you to set a password (If not already set during the OS installation or MOK is not enrolled after the OS installation) that will be used to enroll the Machine-Owner key (MOK) in your system’s UEFI firmware.

Click OK on configuring secure boot wizard >> Enter a password for secure boot >> Enter the password again to confirm the password.

Reboot the system to enroll the MOK.

sudo reboot

Upon system reboot, press any key to start the MOK management utility

1. Choose Enroll MOK

2. Choose View Key 0 to view the Machine Owner Key. If the key is OK, press enter and then select Continue

3. Choose Yes to enroll the key(s) and then enter the password you supplied during the import

4. Finally, choose Reboot to reboot the system

Launch Oracle VirtualBox

After the installation, you can launch VirtualBox by going to Activities >> Search for VirtualBox or running the virtualbox command in the terminal.
